Formative assessment materials for the T Level in Craft and design
This T Level Resource Improvement Project (TRIP) has produced a range of learning materials, developed by an experienced T Level provider. These learning materials will support learners to develop their understanding of the Core Content of the T Level in Craft and design and to support them to prepare for their Core exams.
The project resources have been developed by Westminster Kingsway College which is one of the three colleges in the Capital City Colleges Group (CCCG). The TRIP focusses on formative assessment of learners understanding of Core Content, particularly in relation to:
- AO2 – Apply knowledge and understanding of contexts, concepts, theories and principles to different situations and contexts.
- AO3 – Analyse and evaluate information and issues related to contexts, concepts, theories and principles to make informed judgements.
The resource consists of a number of questions designed to address these Assessment Objectives.
There are 20 questions addressing AO2 and 10 questions addressing AO3. Each question specifies:
- targeted content – the specification reference that the question is designed to assess
- the question itself
- indicative content – an indication of the content that a learner may provide in response to the question
- a specific reference to the Assessment Objective:
- Context highlights the key context or situation that learners need to refer to in their application to the scenario (AO2)
- Issue – relates to the key points in the scenario that should be the focus of the response (AO3)
- a model answer – an exemplar response that meets the targeted content and assessment objective.
Questions have been designed to address the different occupations covered by the Occupational Specialism within this T Level ie
- Ceramics maker
- Furniture maker
- Jewellery maker
- Textiles and fashion maker.
There is also a section in the resource that includes development activities to support learners to develop their understanding and ability to respond to exam style questions. Learners on craft and design related programmes were asked to produce responses to 10 of the questions within the resource. The responses given were then used to provide individual feedback and development activities. The responses, feedback and development activities are presented in a slide deck with a voice over.
It should be noted that the specification for the T Level in Craft and design had not been produced during the period that the project was being undertaken. The Core Content was derived from the Outline Content document which is used by Pearson to develop their specification.
The Core Content areas are:
- The creative economy
- The individual in the creative industries
- Cultural context and vocabulary
- Audience
- Legislation/regulation
- Professionalism and ethics
- Equality, diversity and inclusion
- Research skills
- Project methodology and administration
- Continued professional development.

Materials to support the contextualisation of maths content in the T Level in Craft and Design
This T Level Resource Improvement Project (TRIP) has produced a range of learning materials, developed by an experienced T Level provider. These learning materials will support learners to develop maths skills contextualised to specific content of the T Level in Craft and design
Produced by Westminster Kingsway College, this TRIP provides an accessible framework for learning, lesson plans and supporting learning materials that will enable learners to apply maths concepts, techniques and principles to the Core Content of the T Level in Craft and design
The resources include:
- a framework for learning to show how the contextualised maths content can be scaffolded and sequenced
- seven lesson plans which cover 22 hours of learning to support the development of the maths skills in conjunction with Core Content
- learning materials to support each lesson which enables the delivery of the 22 hours of learning
The theme running through the seven lessons is that of costing a design and production project relevant to the textile and fashion industry.
The framework for learning scaffolding learning towards the completion of a credible project. The project will involve the learner considering the financial aspects of introducing a new fashion line or accessory.
The Core Content relevant to the seven lessons is from Core Content areas 2, 3 and 9, in particular:
- Core Knowledge 2.5 – Employment models and their features used in the creative industries
- Core Knowledge 2.6- The importance of financial acumen in supporting operations in creative industries
- Core Knowledge 2.7 – The features of personal and business taxation
- Core Knowledge 3.1-The influence of external factors on the emergence and evolution of style, tastes and trends in the creative industries
- Core Knowledge 3.1.2- environmental factors: Sustainability – Impacts on the materials, products and processes available.
- Core Knowledge 9.1- The stages and requirements in a project life cycle
The lessons also provide opportunities to support development of Core Skills, in particular:
- Core Skill 3 (CS3): Communicating ideas
- Core Skill 6 (CS6): Reflective practice
The maths content and development of maths skills is based on the General Mathematics Competencies (GMCs) which are embed with the T Level in Craft and design. The maths techniques and skills are likely to have been established through Functional Skills or GCSE maths preparation, but the focus of these lessons is to further develop these techniques and skills through contextualised in work-related contexts
these techniques and skills through contextualised craft and design work-related contexts.
The GMCs focus mainly on using the ‘four operations’, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and measurements, which may also require the use of shapes and patterns.
Each lesson has a lesson plan and resources to support learning. There is a separate slide deck, with animation that can be used to support delivery of the lessons.
