Developing student behaviours on industry placements

Document summary

To make the most of industry placements, students need to know which behaviours are expected at work before they start their placement.

Reviewing students’ behavioural readiness and identifying behaviours for development before they start an industry placement will help to make it a valuable and fulfilling experience for students and employers.

This will give you a starting point from which to monitor how students develop behaviours during the placement and will contribute to employability skills outcomes.

The resource consists of:

  • A checklist to go through with each employer, to define what behaviours they expect from students on industry placements in their organisation
  • A template to identify a student’s behavioural readiness before they start an industry placement and record actions to take during the industry placement to develop these behaviours

Use the checklist in your discussions with employers to identify behaviours which they expect from students on industry placements.

You will be able to create your own standardised set of base-level expectations and give employers the opportunity to include additional specific behaviours.

Link these to the industry placement agreement and student logbook
