Core content

Students will develop an understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to the sector, including: 

  • business context – an overview of organisational cultures and values, different types of internal and external stakeholder, different forms of governance and the impact of organisations on society and the environment
  • project and change management – an understanding of the common change management theories and models and how to support and improve projects
  • business behaviours – the importance of good communication and adapting social communication styles to professional standards and according to purpose, medium and audience
  • quality and compliance – the importance of maintaining and improving quality in all aspects of public and private sector organisations

In addition to the core content, each student will also complete at least 1 module of occupation-specific content:

Developing formative assessment materials for core exam content

This T Level Resource Improvement Project (TRIP) consists of materials for developing learners’ assessment and exam skills in preparation for external examinations in the Business and Administration T Level.

Produced by East Sussex College, this TRIP provides tutors with a methodology on how best to support the development of skills for external examinations, which can be applied to other T Level programmes.

Resources include:

  • a set of formative assessment questions to support the development of skills and understanding in reference to answering core examination questions
  • a learner workbook with assessment activities, objectives, and questions
  • a tutor guide with guidance about the nine developmental activities.

Developmental activities

There are nine suggested developmental activities covering each of the core elements that can be used to support further learning. These may be used to support formative assessment for learners who are unable to demonstrate responses to the expected standard. The activities can be used to further develop learners’ understanding and application of the concepts, principles and theories covered by the content.

The activities cover the following topics:

  1. Command verbs.
  2. Examination self-confidence assessment.
  3. Assessment objectives.
  4. Examination technique.
  5. Identifying key information in a text.
  6. Timed writing.
  7. Linking theory to application.

Contextualised learning materials to support understanding and skills of challenging maths concepts

This T Level Resource Improvement Project (TRIP) is a collection of teaching materials designed to support teachers to deliver the maths content using real world, contextualised examples for the T Level in Business and Administration.

Produced by South Essex College and Derby College, this TRIP includes a package of employer-informed materials to support students develop the required maths knowledge and understanding.

Resources include:

  • a framework for learning, covering eight hours of learning focusing on unit 4 of the Finance element
  • lesson plans and associated materials
  • excel spreadsheets with cash flow resources example and related activities
  • worksheets including:
    • case studies
    • financial terms blank-filling activity and answers
    • profit and loss statement activity and answers
    • gross and net profit activity and answers
    • spotting financial errors balance sheet
    • double-entry bookkeeping activity and answers
    • cash flow activity, answers and template.

Teachers can make use of the presentation to help inform prospective students who are contemplating joining the T Level course and can be used to help raise the confidence of students when speaking to prospective placement providers. Resources can also be used in marketing and promotional materials for the T level courses and to prepare learners for potential activities they may experience.

The core elements linked to these activities are:

  • 4.1 Outline the common terms used in financial reporting.
  • 4.2 The role and purpose of financial reporting.
  • 4.3 Sources of finance for different types of organisations.
  • 4.4 Different forms of expenditure.
  • 4.5 Use the formula for profit margin (net profit / revenue) to calculate the profit margin percentage.

General English competencies

  • GEC2: Presenting information and ideas.
  • GEC4: Summarising information/ideas.

Provider preparation to deliver the Business and Administration T Level (with an Occupational Specialism of Business Support)

This T Level Resource Improvement Project (TRIP) provides materials for topics in the core-content, leadership and management and business-support specialisms, in the Business and Administration T Level.

Produced by Ursuline High School, St Philomena’s Catholic High School for Girls, Christ the King Sixth Form College, Norbury Manor Business & Enterprise College, this TRIP provides learning sessions and activities that will enable learners to practice using their knowledge in situations they will face in the workplace.

This project produced a long-term scheme of learning (SOL) delivery overview, and short-term SOL, together with three accompanying summative assessments. Resources include five fully developed lesson plans alongside PowerPoint presentations covering:

  • supporting the running of the organisation
  • how to organise meetings and events
  • how to produce a PESTLE analysis
  • project and change management.
  • lead, manage, and develop individuals and teams
  • why leadership is important
  • leadership styles
  • team development.

Also included are three assessments covering a range of core skills.

This T Level Resource Improvement Project (TRIP) provides materials to help learners develop the required knowledge understanding and skills to successfully achieve their Business and Administration T Level.

Produced by South Essex College, this TRIP aids the production of a high-quality, accessible, and relevant employer informed case study which combines core and occupational specialism content.

Exploring Industry Placement options for Digital and Business T Level learners within the Football Industry

This T Level Resource Improvement Project (TRIP) constitutes of key knowledge, skills, behaviours, and occupational competencies required to work in the football industry for the T Level in Digital and Business.

Produced by Weston College, with contributions from Bridgwater and Taunton College, Somerset FA, Taunton Town FC, Bridgwater United FC and Weston-super-Mare FC, this TRIP provides a guide for employers and providers, and outlines some activities to support the hosting of industry placements for football organisations.

This TRIP is designed to be used by football employers as well as provider employer engagement teams to help identify activities and understand how best to engage with T level learners, and to support talent pipelines for the future workforce, ensuring high quality and relevant placement provisions can be sourced and sustained.

Employer co-created case studies and learning materials to support the delivery of the T Level in Management and administration Core Content

This T Level Resource Improvement Project (TRIP) has produced case study materials, and a range of learning materials to support the delivery of T Level in Management and administration Core Content and Core Skills. The case studies and learning materials have been developed by an experienced T Level provider, with input from employers.

Produced by Loughborough College and peer reviewed by Walsall Academy, this TRIP provides an accessible framework for learning, lesson plans and supporting learning materials that will enable learners to develop understanding of key concepts in the Core Content for the T level in Management and administration.

Loughborough College worked closely with two employers to develop the case study materials.  The two employers were selected to represent different types of businesses operating in different industries.  Rather than presented as case studies, the employers provided their own resources or assisted in designing credible resources that learners can engage with to grasp the key concepts.

All TRIP materials are designed to support contextualised understanding of Core Content area 2: People.  The Core Content area was selected so that the understanding can be used by learners to support them in engaging with employers that are adopting a selection process to recruit learners to an Industry Placement.  The lessons focus on practical activities that can be used to develop understanding of the concepts.

The resources include:

  • a framework for learning to show how learning can be scaffolded and sequenced to develop understanding
  • case studies materials to support the scaffolding and sequencing of learning
  • nine lesson plans to support the scaffolding of the understanding of Core Content
  • learning materials to support each lesson which enables the delivery of the framework for learning.

The framework for learning and supporting lesson plans provided in this resource cover the following Core Content:

  • 2.2 The ways in which different types of organisations ensure that they have the right people
  • 2.5 Different approaches to the way people are managed

Lessons allow for the development of the following Core Skills:

  • Core Skill C (CSC): Communication
  • Core Skill D (CSD): Working collaboratively with others
  • Core Skill E (CSE): Applying a logical approach to problem-solving
  • Core Skill G (CSG): Reflective practice.

As well as the case studies, which provide contextualised learning, the learning materials to support each lesson include task sheets, templates and activities.

Produced by Franklin College, this TRIP provides a framework for learning, lesson plans, case studies and learning materials to support contextualised understanding of Core Content area 4: Finance and Core Skill D (CSD): Working collaboratively with others.

The resources include:

  • a framework for learning to show how learning can be scaffolded and sequenced to develop understanding
  • case studies to support the scaffolding and sequencing of learning.
  • seven lesson plans which cover 21 hours of learning to support the scaffolding of the understanding of Core Content.
  • learning materials to support each lesson which enables the delivery of the 21 hours of learning.

The framework for learning and supporting lesson plans provided in this resource cover the following Core Content:

  • the role of financial reporting to organisations.
  • the different areas of financial reporting and how these differ (e.g., income/sales and spend/costs).
  • the range of report types including balance sheets, profit and loss accounts, management accounts, year-end reporting, and cash flow.
  • the purpose of financial reporting.
  • the importance of financial reporting and its accuracy.
  • basic profit and loss calculations, including gross and net profit and profit margins. How they are calculated using different formulae
  • the concept of and calculation of break-even point.
  • how financial reports are generated.
