Guide for parents, carers and other trusted adults explaining the purpose and value of T Level industry placements

Contents

Parents, carers and other trusted adults often play an important role in helping young people prepare for and succeed during their T Level industry placement.

For many families, industry placements are unfamiliar and can feel very different from previous experiences of school, college or work experience. Questions are often raised around workplace expectations, travel, working hours, communication with employers and how best to support young people as they begin their placement journey.

This resource has been developed to support schools and colleges to provide clear, supportive and realistic information for parents, carers and supporters about T Level industry placements.

It is designed to help:

  • explain the purpose and value of industry placements
  • support conversations about workplace expectations and professional behaviours
  • encourage confidence, independence and readiness in young people
  • help families understand how to support students positively throughout the placement experience
  • reduce uncertainty and build confidence before placements begin

The guide is intended to feel supportive rather than prescriptive and works best when introduced as part of wider placement preparation activity. Providers may choose to use the resource:

  • during enrolment or induction activity
  • at parent/carer information events
  • as part of pre-placement communication
  • within tutorial or readiness sessions
  • alongside wider student readiness resources and employer information

Schools and colleges should add their own placement or industry placement contact details before sharing the resource with parents, carers and other trusted adults.
