Join us for this insightful T Level workshop with Siobhan Nangle, Paediatric Diabetes Nurse at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, as she discusses the importance of multidisciplinary teams to support the patient journey of a Type 1 diabetic and how budding health and education and early years professionals can play their part in diagnosing and caring for children and young adults with Type 1 diabetes.


Siobhan has 23 years’ experience as a Paediatric Nurse, 7 years working on a busy children's ward in a general hospital then became a Children's Community Nurse for Orchard Service for 12 years. Orchard Service delivers care for babies, Children and Young People with complex and acute medical conditions including oncology and end of life care. Siobhan’s specialist interest has always been Type 1 Diabetes taking the link nurse role for diabetes on the ward and also in the community, then she became a full time Paediatric Diabetes Nurse 4 years ago.

In this workshop, Siobhan will be sharing:  

  • an introduction to Type 1 Diabetes and how this differs from other forms of Diabetes such as Type 2, MODY and Cystic Fibrosis related Diabetes
  • how  Type 1 Diabetes is managed, looking at the role of insulin, injections, blood glucose monitoring, normal glucose values, hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia and use of technology (Hybrid Closed insulin pumps and CGM sensors)
  • red flags to observe for in identifying Type 1 Diabetes (4 T'S) and the serious consequences of delayed or missed diagnosis, looking at current research and guidance around Type 1 diabetes in children
  • role of the Multidisciplinary Team, Consultant, Paediatric Diabetes Nurse, Dietitian and Clinical Psychologist
  • how school staff and ward staff are supported by the Paediatric Diabetes MDT to manage children with Type 1 Diabetes in school and Hospital.
