We welcome all animal specialists and educators to join us for the final Animal Care and Management workshop of the year, which will be led by Joe Cooke, Animal Unit Manager at Halesowen College and the Founder and Chair of UK Animal Care Technicians (UKACT) to discuss collection planning in preparation for the next academic year.

UKACT is a professional association dedicated to supporting animal care staff in educational settings across the UK. With a background spanning six years in zoological institutions, including roles at Chessington World of Adventures, Battersea Park Children’s Zoo, All Things Wild, and West Midlands Safari Park, Joe moved into the education sector in 2018. At Halesowen College, he leads a team responsible for the care of over 120 species, placing strong emphasis on high standards of animal husbandry and welfare.

In 2019, Joe launched UKACT as a Facebook group to improve communication among animal care technicians working in education. The group quickly grew in size and influence, evolving into a formal association that now provides peer-reviewed Best Practice Guidelines, annual conferences, and hands-on workshops. UKACT's mission is to connect professionals from animal-based educational institutions, sharing knowledge and promoting best practices to enhance animal welfare and the learning experience for students alike.

Joe will be discussing the following themes to support you with your collection planning:

  • An introduction to UKACT
  • Work that UKACT is doing, their values, aims and mission
  • Things to consider when keeping animals in an education setting
  • How to choose your collections and factors to consider
  • Animal welfare and husbandry specific to collections

There will also be a live Q&A with Joe on the day.
