Join this Industry Insights workshop with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) as they discuss providing specialist support for children, young people and students with vision impairment.

The RNIB is one of the UK’s leading sight loss charities and the largest community of blind and partially sighted people. In the UK, there are more than 41,000 children and young people supported by local authority Vision Impairment (VI) specialist education services. RNIB’s Education and Children’s Service provide support to children and young people with VI, their family members and professionals that work alongside them. They offer specialist information, advice and guidance, specific to the need of the individual. In addition, they support the specialist education workforce through resources and training.

Our speaker Simon Kerrigan, Qualified Teacher of Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (QTVI) in the RNIB Education Team, will be covering:
- The specialist vision impairment (VI) workforce
- The Curriculum Framework for children and young people with Vision Impairment (CFVI)
- How the CFVI supports:
   - An appreciation of the impact of VI on learning
   - Creation of an accessible learning environment
   - Involving the child or young person with VI in planning their own learning
   - Development of self-esteem and self-advocacy skills
   - Collaborative working with the child and young person, their family and other professionals to provide equitable access to education
- RNIB’s support services for education professionals and for families
- RNIB’s Bookshare service
- Organisations offering counselling and wellbeing support tailored for children and young people with vision impairment
- Guide Dogs’ services to support education and families

There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask Simon any questions during the session.
