T Levels: Industry Workshop - Construction and Engineering & Manufacturing - Using maths to build bridge abutments with Costain
Costain are a construction engineering company who bring together a unique mix of engineering solutions for increasingly complex problems within the four strategic markets of transport, water, energy and defence. Rosey Thurling, Agent at Costain, is a chartered engineer with 10 years on site experience and manages the construction of roads and bridges. Join Rosey at this practical Industry Insights session as she walks us through how to build bridge abutments using maths. Rosey will be covering: - How to build bridge abutments - How to calculate concrete volumes for bridge abutments - How to calculate the rate of concrete supply (i.e. how many wagons are required) - Ordering and managing the concrete for a large bridge abutment - What could go wrong? This session relates to the site side of construction and civil engineering as well as linking to the core content of the Construction T Levels by providing an example of using mathematical techniques to solve construction problems. There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask Rosey any questions during the session as well as a resource sheet being made available afterwards to share with your learners. |
